Rhode Island School of Design

More than 40 years before women in America were granted the right to vote, RISD was formed by a small group of women. That year, Helen Adelia Rowe Metcalf lobbied the Rhode Island Women’s Centennial Commission’s 34 members to invest $1,675 in establishing a school of art and design with funds generated for RI’s participation in the Philadelphia Centennial Exhibition in 1876. (instead of building a public fountain, one of the other options on the table).
This school offers 4 year undergraduate courses in Apparel Design and Textile. You can learn pattern drafting, draping and construction of clothes in a studio setting with an emphasis on practical skill building.
The need to support the state’s burgeoning textiles and jewelry industries drove the creation of the college, with the earliest courses offered at RISD focusing on two key areas: freehand drawing and painting and mechanical drawing and design.
First-year studios in Experimental and Foundation Studies are required of all undergraduate students at RISD, followed by a major course of study in specific fine arts or design areas beginning sophomore year. Liberal arts courses are rigorous and enhance studio learning.
