Easy embroidered neckline

If you want to show off beautiful embroidery on the front of a neckline, there is a favourite method I always use – the facing technique. This involves attaching a separate fabric piece (the facing) with embroidery to the neckline. Once sewn, the facing will be folded to the front, revealing your embroidery on the right side.

Here is how I do it

Watch the video tutorial :

Cut out your bodice. Fold the bodice by the middle.

Cut the facing fabric and fold it also by the mimddle. You can interface the facing fabric for a crisper look.

Mark the neckline shape on top.

Cut the facing and the bodice using the same neckline shape.

I have marked the facing width as 2.5 inches; you can choose any border width.

Cut it out

Do the embroidery on the facing – infact, embroidery can be done before or after you cut the facing. If you do the embroidery after you have cut the facing shape, there is a danger of the edges fraying due to handling. Make sure that enough space is left for edge stitching.

A woven rose is done by making about 7 spokes around a circle and then weavinf embroidery floss over and under the spokes. You can embroider other flower designs -simple, complicated, what have you.

Embroidery stitches used here: Embroidered rose flowers ; Lazy daisy embroidery stitches ; French knot. Add sequins or bugle beads or any other sparkly beads for your quota of bling.

embroider on neckline facing

After the embroidery is done, fold the edge of the facing to the back and press in place. Ensure that you have a neat edge as this will be seen on the front.

Place the facing (right side down) on the back side of the neckline, aligning the raw edges.

Sew around the V-neckline, pivoting carefully at the point.

Clip the seam allowances, especially at the V-point, to reduce bulk.

Stitch the facing seam allowance and edge of the garment – ensure that the seam allowance is towards the garment at all times as you sew.

Now, the facing with the embroidery will easily turn to the front.

edge stitch the facing on the front of the neckline

Carefully press the facing outward and topstitch close to the edge of the facing, ensuring everything lies flat.
