Ombre refers to the gradual blending of one color to another or a gradual change of light color to dark – imagine colors fading into each other. This shading mimics a lot of colors in the nature and is used in textile design to add visual depth. You just have to design your colors so that they look like one is dissolving into the other to create these calming, whimsical effect on your clothes.

This term is used in textile printing to refer to dyeing the yarn or fabric to achieve this color effect or printing on the fabric surface to get this effect. Fabric can be woven with dyed yarns in the ombre shading.

But you can create these effects with surface decoration too – through embroidery, painting etc., which is what this post is all about. What to do if you got a plain fabric and you want the ombre effect. I am one person with limited ideas, capabilities and time, there are a lot of things you will be able to achieve exploring this idea – the results are going to be fantastic.

Ombre DYEING

Dip dyeing is the most common practise to make ombre shading on fabrics. And the easiest if you are comfortable dyeing.

dip dyeing tshirts

You dip a portion of your clothing into the dye solution first. If I am dip dyeing a t-shirt I would dip the bottom part first and leave it in the dye solution for 30 minutes. Then dip the rest of the t-shirt gradually in stages, 20 minutes, 10 minutes, 5 minutes. Each higher section stays in for less time, and this will result in lighter shades at the top gradually darkening to the bottom. The color seeping into the fabric creates that dark light transition which is what ombre is all about.

You can use the following color schemes for adding different depth and variations in your ombre effect. You can use analogous color scheme in which you will be using the nearby colors in the color wheel or complementary colors, which are opposite colors in the color wheel – both create different and beautiful effects.

Ombre Embroidery

The easiest stitch for creating this effect is a long and short stitch. You can do the embroidery using multiple thread shades of the same color family ( Light blue → medium blue → dark blue or in my stitching dark pink to light pink) and the smooth gradient filling is quite pleasing.

Bargello embroidery is perfect for this, because of its repeating stitch pattern. Each row uses a slightly different shade creating the ombre effect.

Colors graduating from a light shade to a darker shade have a very soothing and aesthetic effect.

Ombre painting

Paint can be applied in gradient shades to get this effect. To get this, you start painting this color either at the top of the design or the bottom and gradually shift to another color or lighter color of the same family

Start by applying the darkest color at the bottom of the fabric using fabric paint or acrylic + fabric medium. Mix a lighter shade and paint the section above, blending the two colors while still wet using a clean, damp brush or sponge. Continue doing this. You have to blend each section to the other to create that gradient effect..

You can use monochromatic colors of a single color to get this shaded design. The dark color fading into a lighter shade has a subtly dramatic element to it. When the colors fade from one area to the other, it adds a depth which is not there if it is a plain color.

If you want to use more than one color, it should be harmonious together. And it is better to use less than 3 colors (Unless you like the busy look).
