As a neckline with a geometric shape, the square neckline is quite a favorite because of its clean and structured look. While it may not be everyone’s favorite, those with a liking for it find it very elegant and flattering.
Drafting square necklines is quite easy.

The dimensions of a square neckline depends on how wide or narrow you want the square to appear. Generally, the width of this neckline is marked 3 to 6 inches from the center line of the bodice.
(When marking the neckline as 6 inches wide from the center line, note that the bodice strap width will depend on your shoulder width and overall design. It will give you a narrow strap of around 1 inch, depending on the pattern’s design)
Depth can be marked 3 inches to 4 inches from the neckline.
To make the pattern, take your squaring scale and fold your bodice. Place the scale on top of the fold, align the lines on the scale with the fold, and mark the neckline to get everything symmetrical and squared.
You can mark this on facing fabric and finish the neckline with the facing.
Alternatively, you can add lace trims to the square neckline using a very simple folding technique.
Here is a video detailing this method:
First, finish the neckline. I have cut the neckline with an extra 1/2 inch.
And then folded the excess to the back. Press it in place.
Next, measure the width of your trim.
Mark this beneath the neckline.
Place the lace trim on top and sew it in place, folding it as shown in the pictures below.
Fold it up.
Sew in place.
If you want to bind your square neckline, here is a very easy method. You will have to cut your binding material with 1/2 inch extra – this is turned towards the back and pressed in place before starting sewing. Cut your square neckline and then do as the video suggests:
