Zippered sideseam pocket

Zippered exposed pocket

In this pocket, the zipper is visible from the outside. I have seen this pocket mostly on jeans as coin pockets with zips and also as decorative or utility pockets on cargo or fashion denim. And on bags.

In this jeans the metal zipper is clearly a decorative element.

and also inside bags ; on bags it is sewn inside on the lining material. You can sew it inside totebags, handbags and even purses. Or as a seperate pouch as in this case.

You can use the smaller nylon zippers or metal one.

Instructions to sew the zippered pocket

Watch the video tutorial

Step 1.Cut out the pocket fabric such that it is doubled down to form the pocket bag on the back. Cut the pocket fabric twice the finished pocket height, plus seam allowance, so it can be folded down to form the pocket bag on the back.

Decide pocket size and placement on your bag.
On the pocket piece draw a rectangle the same length as the zipper opening

Rectangle height: ½ inch (1.25 cm)

This rectangle is your stitching and cutting guide – the pocket opening.

Step 2. Keep the pocket fabric right side down on the garment face up (or lining of the bag face up)

Step 3. Stitch along the rectangle you marked.

Stitch exactly on the rectangle lines

Pivot neatly at the corners

Step 4: Cut the opening

Cut a line through the center of the rectangle

Stop ½ inch before the ends. Cut small diagonal triangles into each corner

Step 5: Turn and press

Push the pocket fabric through the opening to the back

Smooth out the rectangle

Press carefully so the opening is crisp and flat

You should now see a clean rectangular opening

Step 6: Keep the zipper on the back

Place the zipper behind the opening. Zipper teeth should be visible and centered

Tape or pin in place

Stitch around the rectangle from the right side using a zipper foot or a narrow foot.

Stitch close to the folded edge

Step 7: Form the pocket bag

On the back, Fold the pocket fabric in half, right sides together

Stitch around the pocket edges

Keep the main fabric of the garment or bag out of the way
