30 Different types of Hoodies

Hoodies are a type of hooded clothing. They could be a sweatshirt or sweater (pullover or jumper, or jersey) or any similar garment with a hood attached. They can be worn over the head to provide warmth and protection, especially in cold or windy conditions.

The hood is a built-in head covering that is typically attached to the back of the sweatshirt. It can be pulled over the head when needed.

The classic hoodie

The classic hoodie consists of a long-sleeved sweatshirt with a hood attached to the back of the neck. The hood has a drawstring or adjustable cord at the neckline, allowing the wearer to tighten or loosen the hood as desired.

A distinguishing feature of a classic hoodie is a large front pouch pocket, also known as a kangaroo pocket. This pocket is placed at the front of the sweatshirt. It is usually divided into two compartments. The large pocket serves both functional and aesthetic purposes, allowing you to keep your hands warm or store small items like keys or a phone.

It usually has ribbed cuffs at the wrists and a ribbed hem at the bottom.

Fleece Hoodies

Fleece fabric is known for its warmth and insulating properties. A fleece hoodie is a hoodie where the interior lining is made of fleece, while the exterior may be made of different materials.

They are great for cold outdoor workouts. However, they may not be ideal for warm weather.

Some hoodies may have both the interior and exterior made of fleece – they are suitable for extremely cold weather conditions.

French Terry Hoodies

French Terry is a type of knit fabric with loops on the surface. These French terry hoodies made from French Terry fabric, have super-soft interiors for added comfort.

Cotton knit Hoodies

Cotton knit fabric is known for its comfort, breathability and soft nature. It is adequately stretchy. The cotton may also be a blend – usually a cotton-polyester blend. These can be your everyday hoodie – the all-weather one.

This hoodies are made from a blend of polyester and spandex fabrics.

Polyester is a synthetic fabric known for its durability, wrinkle resistance, and moisture-wicking properties. Spandex, also known as elastane or Lycra, is a stretchy synthetic fiber that provides elasticity and flexibility to fabrics.

The combination of these fabrics offers a unique set of characteristics and benefits. Gives you a snug yet comfortable fit that moves with you – even a body hugging fit; makes you feel dry and comfortable during workouts or physical activities; withstand repeated washing and wear, and lasts for long.

Technical hoodies

These are made of four-way stretch fabric with enhanced performance like superior moisture-wicking properties, insulating elements, waterproofing treatments etc.

Fur lined hoodie

This hoodie will have a soft and insulating fur lining on the interior.

The fur lining is intended to add an extra layer of warmth and insulation for extreme cold weather. Real fur material or fur like materials like Artificial Fur Varieties, sherpa fleece, or other plush fabrics can be used inside the hoodie.

Pullover Hoodie 

Also called pullovers, these are your regular hoodies but without any fasteners – it is just pulled over the head.

The front of the hoodie is closed, and there is no zipper or buttons down the center. These are popular for their casual and relaxed style.

Hoodies with drawstring closure at the neck

These are hooded sweatshirts that have a drawstring or cord running through a channel or casing around the neck area.

Zip-Up Hoodie

The Zip hoodie or sip-up hoodie features a full-length front zipper that extends from the hem to the neckline.

Half-Zip Hoodies

These are half-zip pullovers or half-zip sweatshirts with a half-length zipper at the front and stopping at the chest midpoint.

This zipper can be unzipped to create an opening from the neckline to the chest, allowing for easy on and off and providing ventilation. They are pulled over the head and then zipped to the desired position.

Quarter-Zip Hoodie

This quarter-zip pullover or quarter-zip sweatshirt has a front zipper that extends approximately one-fourth of the way down the garment. The zipper typically extends from the neckline down to the upper chest area. It allows for easy on and off and provides some ventilation options.

The quarter-zip design allows wearers to adjust the opening at the neckline according to their preferences. It can be worn fully closed, partially open for ventilation, or left unzipped for an open neckline.

Buttoned Hoodie

The button-front hoodie or button-up hoodie features buttons down the front instead of a zipper ie a row of buttons running from the neckline down to the hem. It can be fully buttoned for a closed look, partially buttoned for ventilation, or left unbuttoned for an open neckline.

Varsity Hoodies

Varsity hoodies are also known as letterman hoodies or varsity-inspired hoodies as they have many design elements of traditional varsity or letterman jackets.

They incorporate classic elements associated with American collegiate and high school sports culture like prominent lettering and graphics on the front and back. These typically include large letters, numbers, school or team names, and mascots. These graphics are often created using chenille patches or embroidery.

They may also have snap button closures or buttons down the front, mimicking the buttoned-up look of traditional varsity jackets.

Athletic Hoodies

These are also called sports hoodies or performance hoodies. They are designed specifically for athletic or sports-related activities like workouts, training sessions, and other physical activities.

Athletic hoodies are typically made from moisture-wicking fabrics like polyester blends that pull sweat away from the body, helping to keep the wearer dry and comfortable during intense physical activities. They may have breathable panels or mesh inserts in strategic areas, such as under the arms or on the back, to enhance airflow and ventilation. They also will have an element of stretch for range of motion and flexibility

Blocked Hoodies

These are color-blocked hoodies with distinct color-blocking or contrasting panels of fabric used in their design.

Panels in multiple colors are usually sewn together to create a visually bold and eye-catching design.

Graphic Hoodies

These are hoodies with printed or embroidered graphics, designs, images, text, or artwork on the front, back, sleeves, or any other part of the garment. These designs can vary widely and encompass a broad range of themes, styles, and subject matter, such as nature, animals, pop culture, sports, music, politics, and more. Text-based graphics, slogans, quotes, or typography can convey a message, express humor, promote a brand, or simply serve as a decorative element.

You can wear a graphic hoodie that showcases your individuality and unique style preferences.

3D Print Hoodies

3D hoodies have designs that pop out. These are also called sublimation hoodies or all-over print hoodies.

They have vivid, detailed, and often eye-catching graphic designs that cover the entire surface of the garment. The graphics on 3D print hoodies are applied using a sublimation printing technique.

Camouflage Hoodies

These are also known as camo hoodies. They feature camouflage patterns, inspired by military or hunting camouflage.

Camo hoodies are characterized by a mix of colors and shapes that help the wearer blend into natural surroundings. They come in shades of green, brown, and black. These are typically used for outdoor activities, like hunting, hiking, camping etc.

Oversized Hoodie

This hoodie is intentionally designed to be much larger and looser than the wearer’s typical size.

These hoodies are characterized by their baggy, relaxed fit meant for a laid-back vibe and comfortable fit.

To get this style, buy one that is one or more sizes larger than your standard size.

Baja Hoodie

This hoodie features vibrant patterns – this is the most distinctive feature of a Baja hoodie. The patterns typically consist of horizontal stripes of various colors. It has a visually appealing bohemian look and is associated with a laid-back, bohemian lifestyle.

Sleeveless Hoodie

This hoodie does away with the sleeves while retaining the hood.  It can be layered over T-shirts, tank tops, or other long-sleeve garments. Sleeveless hoodies typically have a front zipper or button closure.

It has a casual and sporty aesthetic and can be used for various activities, including workouts, sports, outdoor adventures, or as casual streetwear.

Hoodie with Thumb Holes

These hoodies have built-in openings or cuffs in the sleeves designed to accommodate the wearer’s thumbs. These are small openings located near the cuffs of the sleeves, allowing the wearer to slide their thumbs through.

They are designed to keep sleeves in place. They also provide added warmth and protection for the hands, making these hoodies suitable for cooler weather.

Hoodie Vest

A hoodie vest is a vest or waistcoat with a hood attached to the back. It often has a zippered or buttoned front closure, similar to a vest or jacket.

Tunic Hoodie

Also called a hooded tunic or hoodie tunic or a hooded dress, the tunic hoodie combines the features of a traditional hoodie with the elongated length and loose fit typically associated with tunics.

They often extend well below the hips and sometimes even reaching the mid-thigh or knee area. They can be worn with leggings, jeans, or skirts.

Cropped Hoodie

This is a hoodie with a cropped appearance, typically ending above the waist or at the midriff.

Cropped hoodies usually have a loose and relaxed fit in the body and sleeves. It has a casual and trendy aesthetic.

Interactive Hoodies (Hi tech hoodies)

These are hoodies incorporating functional elements like LED lights, touch-sensitive patches, or built-in headphones. They can have electronic components, sensors, or connectivity features that allow for various interactions with the garment. These components can be programmed to respond to various inputs or triggers from you.

For, e.g., Disney launched an interactive hoodie with a pocket in which you can slide your phone in. After you activate their app on your mobile, slide your device into the pocket, and tap the screen, you will activate motion-activated animations, sound effects, etc. It must be exciting for kids. For adults, too!

Convertible Hoodies

Convertible hoodies are designed with elements that allow them to transform or “convert” into different styles that can be worn in multiple ways or configurations. The adjustable elements give you great flexibility to transform the hoodie.

Some hoodies have detachable hoods, so you can use the clothing with or without the hood as per your convenience. Some have zip-off sleeves, allowing you to convert your hoodie into a long-sleeved one or a sleeveless one as per your preference. If the design allows, you can even transform your hoodie into a pillow. The easiest feature is usually reversibility. The versatility of a convertible hoodie is endless.

Hoodie co-ord

This is a matching outfit ensemble consisting of two or more pieces, typically a hoodie and a bottom garment, that are designed to be worn together. Typical co-ord combininations are a hoodie paired with matching joggers, sweatpants, shorts, or a skirt.

Vintage Hoodies

Vintage hoodies are hooded sweatshirts or hoodies designed to replicate the look and feel of hoodies from past decades, particularly those from the 1980s and 1990s.

Hoodies began to gain popularity in the 1970s and were seen as symbols of grit, determination, and the rise of the underdog spirit. If you’re a fan of vintage fashion, you can look out for hoodies similar to that were featured in iconic movies like ‘Rocky.’ Hoodies from the 1990s are regarded as powerful social statements. They have a loose oversized fit and large graphic elements. Limited-edition vintage-style hoodies maybe available in shops for the die-hard vintage fashion aficionado.

You can DIY your own vintage hoodie. Add intentional distressing, such as frayed edges, small holes, or faded spots, to create a vintage and weathered appearance. The colors of vintage hoodies often appear faded or washed out, so to give your hoodie an aged and well-worn look, do the tricks on this page to make the clothing look old. Additionally, retro graphics, logos, or typography common during your favourite era can be added.

Similar to a Hoodie – Hooded Shirts

These are also called hooded tees or hooded long-sleeve shirts. They have the silhouette and design of a regular t-shirt with a hood in the back. They are not typical hoodies as most of the distinct features of hoodies are not present in this type of t-shirt.
