Make a Rose Sleeve

I asked AI to give me the picture of a clothing with rose sleeves for inspiration and it gave me this.

A representative picture of a sleeve with fabric made into roses

It sure looks like the sleeve of an Alexander Macqueen dress I have seen online (maybe because I suggested a dramatic sculptured fabric manipulation style). A little too dramatic for everyday clothing sleeves. You can add fabric roses that you have made on to your sleeves for this look. But there are ways to add a subtle rose shape to your sleeves.

sleeves shaped as a rose

Here are 2 tutorials to sew a sleeve that is manipulated to look like a rose. Would you be adventurous enough to make and wear such a sleeve?

Method 1 for a rose sleeve

Mark a basic sleeve pattern piece according to your size, on paper. Cut the pattern by half.

From the middle extend to a triangle shape. Do this for both the parts – front and back.

Cut the two pieces of your sleeve from this new pattern – for the front and the back.

Now the extended part of the front and the back is to be stitched together along the extended edges.

Mark the extend of the real sleeves on the new sleeve piece.

This marks the length you need to stitch together

Keep the pieces right sides to the inside and stitch together.

Turn it rightside out

You get a piece like this.

Now it gets simpler. Just manipulate the pointed tip to form the rose.

bring the tip of the
press the tip of the stitched fabric inside to form the middle of the rose

This is how the rose sleeve would look. You may have to stitch the rose shape to a lining with hand stitches for it to hold.

As you can see from this video, it is a simple manipulation.

Method 2 for making the rose sleeve

This method actually creates a fabric rose on your sleeve.

This is how it works.

Mark and Cut your basic sleeve pattern piece with a little extra length at the bottom edge – around 2 -3 inches would do for a small rose – this depends on the size of the rose you want to create. If you want a large rose, increase the length.

Mark a shape of a swirl starting from the middle as in the picture.

Cut out the sleeves (From 2 layers of fabric)

Keep the two sleeve pieces together, rightsides to the inside. Sew along the bottom edge, including the swirl.

After stitching, clip the seam allowance, for smooth turning. Turn the sleeve rightside out.

The sleeve will look like this now.

Sew a gathering stitch along the inner edge of the extended part.

To create the rose effect, swirl the extended portion – this will become the petals of the “rose.”

Pull the thread and gather the fabric slightly and curl it in the shape of a rose. This will form the petal look.
Attach the Rose to the sleeve with hand stitches.
